The only thing you need to know to pick the best running shoe

New Balance is going in a completely different direction

New Balance

New Balance is releasing a new kind of shoe.

The brand, which is typically known for its athletic footwear, has teamed up with snowboarding brand Burton to develop a line of snowboarding boots and outdoor shoes.

The collection will offer three outdoor shoe styles and three snowboard boot styles, New Balance said in a release.

Burton designs and manufactures products for snowboarding, including snowboards, boots, bindings, and outerwear.

Both brands benefit from the "street to snow" style shoe partnership. While Burton is trying to engage the year-round consumer, New Balance has been making an effort to rebrand itself for a younger audience since July.

New Balance

Both are private companies — New Balance's 2014 revenue was $2.7 billion.

Burton has also participated in collaborations with Disney, Marvel, Red Wing Shoe, L.A.M.B, and Frye.

The collection will be available at select Burton locations on October 24, and the global release will be November 1.

The self-lacing Nike sneakers from 'Back To The Future' are real

On October 21st, 2015, the very day that Marty McFly and his friends traveled to the future in the 80s movie “Back To The Future Part II,” Nike made the cult film's iconic self-lacing sneakers a reality.

The company announced that a limited run of Nike Air Mag sneakers will be released in Spring 2016, with all proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support Parkinson’s research.

The shoes feature a power lacing system that mimics the one depicted in the movie. When Michael J. Fox tried on the first pair all he managed to say was, “That’s insane.”

Seems like the 80s movie got a lot of future predestines right.

I visited a store for the most controversial shoe brand in retail — and now I know why shares are crashing

SKECHERS

Skechers is one of the most controversial companies in retail right now.

The brand's sales have been soaring, and it recently surpassed Adidas to become the second-largest footwear company behind Nike.

But investors are concerned whether the growth is sustainable. Shares crashed as much as 30% this week after the company reported disappointing earnings.

We visited a Skechers store in Manhattan to see the company's strategy in person.

When I entered the store, I had to double take to see if I was in the right place. For a moment, I thought I was in a DSW. The signature bulky Skechers sneakers were pushed to the back of the store, while the front was dedicated to boots and shoes that resembled Toms, Sperrys, Timberlands, and Uggs.

When I looked more closely, I could see the Skechers logo discretely embroidered on the back of the lookalikes, along with a tag advertising its acclaimed memory foam.

So I get what Skechers is doing now — offering knock-offs of other brands for cheaper prices.

Rihanna is boosting Puma’s business

Puma

Puma is hoping Rihanna can reinvigorate the brand.

The company's profits fell 31% in the most recent quarter to $22 million as sales growth slowed to 3.1% from 7.6% growth in the previous quarter.

But there are signs that its women's business could bolster sales in the coming months with Rihanna at the helm as creative director.

The pop star released her first line of sneakers for the company, called Puma Creepers, in September.

Puma said the shoes were a hit.

"The launch of the first Puma by Rihanna shoe, the 'Creeper,' has been extremely successful and most retailers have sold out within hours or days," Puma CEO Bjørn Gulden said in an earnings call Friday. "We have generally seen a very positive development in our women's business and we will put even more focus on the female consumer going forward."

Puma will look to carry that success into the new year with a full collection of footwear and apparel by Rihanna set to be released in 2016.

Women's activewear, which represents more than $18 billion in annual sales, is expected to grow fast than the men's market over the next decade, according to the research firm NPD Group.

Puma also has a key endorsement from Olympic runner Usain Bolt, who recently won three gold medals in Beijing in August.

Adidas is carving shoes out of a single piece of leather with a high tech milling machine

Nike wants you to wear sneakers all winter long — here's why you shouldn't

$

0

sneakerboot

It goes like this: sneakers are for spring, summer, and fall, while boots are for fall, winter, and spring. Those are the rules. Don't look at me — I didn't make them up!

Now, sports apparel companies like Nike and Adidas are turning that conventional wisdom on its head.

They've come up with what they're calling "sneakerboots," which are basically winterized, waterproof, grippy shoes based on the sporty silhouettes you know and love, including Nike's Air Force 1 and Adidas' clamshell Superstar

This isn't the first year they've been making these hybrids, but there now seems to be an especially strong push to market them as viable options for combating the imminent slush.

You may have already come to this conclusion, but the shoes are pretty much a disaster. Not only are they expensive — the price can reach as high as $200 (about as expensive as a pair of nice leather boots with a grippy sole) — but they're hideous.

Nike Sneakerboots

Hybrids are almost never better than the original. Like sporks before them, sneakerboots will likely never catch on. They're awkward and silly-looking, too far from boots to be considered rugged and too rugged to be considered sneakers.

You can't even make the case that they're more versatile, as the rugged versions of the sneakers you know and love look positively out of place when there's no wintry flakes on the ground.

The sneakerboots are great if you want to play basketball in the snow. If not, it's best to just get a pair of versatile, nondescript regular boots. We all have to grow up some time.

Kanye West has a great outlook on taking your job seriously

Kanye West recently received the Footwear News Shoe of the Year Award — essentially the Oscar of the sneaker world.

When accepting the award, he gave a surprisingly earnest acceptance speech. He talked about how he felt after the infamous Taylor Swift incident at the VMAs, and joked about his run for president in 2020.

He also explained why he takes creativity so seriously.

"I'm dead serious [about] what I create as an artist in this lifetime while I'm here. It's not a f-cking joke, it's not a question for the paparazzi, it's not some random hate comment on the eighth Hypebeast comment. It's not some whatever they say, go home or what they've been screaming for the past six years. It's about appreciating excellence, understanding and being involved in bringing joy. And I'm not saying I've made perfect things or given perfect speeches or not wasted you guys' time while you're tired as hell, talking you to death. It's something inside, it's a spark that I want to bring joy," West told the audience.

He also said his daughter is one of his biggest creative inspirations.

"And just like when my daughter is singing and jumping around, she might not be finishing her sentences perfectly, but she's bringing so much joy. And I know that she's going to grow up and be amazing. So it's like you can see a spark in the pieces that I do, that one day they can grow up and be amazing," he said.

Nike reveals the tech in its gorgeous new football cleat

Nike invited us to check out its new cleat technology at the company campus in Oregon. There, we saw how the company's stands to revolutionize how football players move. The Nike Vapor Untouchable 2 is a new cleat, not yet available, featuring innovative technology. The carbon fiber plate keeps the shoe light but sturdy, while the design has swapped the traditional round cleats for rectangular studs, improving acceleration and braking time. They premiere during the College Football Playoff, and will be available online and in stores in January.

Kanye West's Yeezys helped Adidas blow Nike out of the water as the most popular sneaker brand on Instagram in 2015

This year was an amazing year for sneakers, if Instagram is any indication.

British-based graphic designer Dan Freebairn, who posts his artistic renditions of popular sneakers on his Instagram account, @KickPosters, decided to see just how amazing it was.

He dug into the numbers, and it turns out the most popular sneaker brand by sales, Nike, can't keep up with its European rival on Instagram.

most liked sneakers instagram 2015

Adidas racked up 78.8 million likes on its account, @adidasoriginals, likely due to the insane popularity of its Yeezy Boost collaboration with Kanye West. Nike, even across its @nike, @nikesportswear, and @jumpman23 (Jordan) brands, couldn't keep up with the popularity of Yeezy.

The sneaker's iterations, of which six have been released so far (the most recent on December 31), have all sold out instantly and subsequently sold for thousands on Ebay. In fact, West's collaboration with Adidas is even more popular than the collaboration with Nike he did back in 2009, according to NikeKicks.com.

Another sneaker, the Adidas Ultra Boost, was also very popular with sneaker fans this year.

Adidas made a number of other smart moves in 2015 to put it on top. It invested in proprietary technology and designs, and it had a number of popular collaborations including one with Star Wars. It also reinvested in old styles like the Stan Smith.

However, when adjusted for likes-to-followers ratio, the tables turn on Adidas somewhat. It seems Vans actually has the most active users, with more likes per follower than any other sneaker brand.
