We talked with the Adidas designer behind the year's coolest sneaker about his collaboration with Kanye West

NMD_HeroShot_S79168_HeelDynamic_CF_300

Adidas closed out 2015 with the release of the NMD, a silhouette that takes old school design elements — check out those chunky blocks — and recombines them in a way that's strikingly fresh.

Sneakerheads embraced the first run. After selling out in retail, they're going for between $300 and $400 on eBay. They arrived at the right cultural moment: "athleisure" has become the number one trend in apparel, and the NMD takes that trend in a street-smart direction.

More variants of the NMD will drop throughout 2016.

We emailed with Nic Galway, Adidas's vice president of Global Design and designer behind the NMD, about where the sneaker came from, where Adidas is going, and his collaboration with a certain rapper-turned-designer.

One of the first things you notice about the NMD is the 'blocking' on the sides of the outsole.

The blocks stabilize the foot while also looking super cool.

"I think it's important to couple technology and innovation with something familiar because it gives a design a context and something the wearer can connect with," Galway tells Tech Insider.

"The future doesn't necessarily have to be 'futuristic,'" Galway says.

'We talk a lot about collective memory at Adidas,' Galway says.

The NMD brings back elements from running shoes that first got big when the 1980s were grasping at the future, like the adidas Micro Pacer (which originally had a built-in pedometer!) and the Boston Super.

Kanye West’s Adidas sneakers were even more valuable than Nike's last year

It's no surprise that 2015 was a huge year for sneakers. And the biggest winners of the year are no surprise either: collaborations.

Fashion and sneaker blog High Snobiety teamed up with Campless, a database for sneaker resellers, to find out what were the highest selling sneakers of the last year, on average. These are the sneakers that are considered "deadstock"— meaning they're brand new, but the retailer no longer sells them, as they were a limited run. Basically, they're rarer than rare.

And the results will surprise no one.

Kanye West's Yeezy Boost 750 in Triple Black took the top spot, selling on Ebay for an average of $1,876.

most expensive sneakers 2015

In fact, the Kanye and Adidas' Yeezy collection took up six of the top 20 most valuable sneaker spots.

The ever-present Air Jordan collaborations with Just Don, Public School NY, rapper Drake's OVO label, Dover Street Market, and both versions of the Supreme collaboration together count for another six, though none cracked the top 10 except for one.

The number-two most valuable sneaker was the Nike Foamspoite One Tianjun, which, according to High Snobiety, was only released in China, thus making it super rare in American reselling markets.

The market for rare footwear has risen to $1 billion in the US, according to High Snobiety. Nike is still dominating —12 of the top 20 most valuable sneakers were from a Nike or Jordan brand.

The chart below shoes the total dollars spent on individual sneaker models. Three Yeezy models were in the top 3, essentially dwarfing the dollar value of the rest of the sneakers released last year.

DJ Khaled shows you the right way to wear sneakers with a tuxedo

We at Business Insider are pretty conservative with our black tie rules. If it can be avoided, we prefer that you don't wear sneakers with your tuxedo.

But if you do, we suggest you do it the way DJ Khaled did at the 2016 Grammys Monday night.

The 40-year-old rapper paired his rather staid patterned tuxedo with a pair of all-black Kanye West's Adidas collaboration Yeezys.

We've panned red carpet sneakers in the past, but these are different. There is something understated and elegant about the suede sneakers.

Here's why we think they work:

  • The sneakers are not loud or obnoxious, and they don't look anything like running shoes.
  • They are a uniform black suede, without much ornamentation or distraction apart from the nylon strap.
  • They aren't shiny and don't draw the eye away from the overall ensemble.
  • They're perfectly suited to the Grammys' more relaxed red carpet dress code.
  • The houndstooth-printed jacket tones down the tuxedo's formality just enough so the sneakers can slot right in.

yeezy dj khaled

We're as surprised as you are that DJ Khaled had the best style move of the 2016 Grammys, but we must give credit where credit is due. His Yeezy 750 in pirate black were a major key to that success.

5 essential rules for wearing sneakers with a suit

$

Sneaker with suit

You have to know the rules before you can break them.

But once you do, go crazy. Case in point: the adventurous look of wearing sneakers with a traditional suit.

We'll admit, this isn't a great look for everyone, and it will never be accepted in the boardroom.

However, when it works, it can really supercharge your style, making your suit suddenly not seem so dressed up anymore.

Like anything, there are some rules you should follow when attempting to take this style plunge off the deep end.

  • Keep it simple. You're already making a serious statement. Don't go for anything flashy or bright, as that will only make your outfit look mismatched and disjointed.
  • Stick to natural materials. Leather and suede are your friends here, and they're the most likely materials to work for your suit-paired sneakers, Man of the World editor Christopher Tennant told the New York Times. Skip the more "athletic" looks that come with nylon. You're not running a marathon, and your shoes don't need to be made for that.
  • Make sure your suit fits slim. There's nothing worse than on-trend stylish footwear combined with a suit that just doesn't fit your body. Picture your grandfather wearing a suit in some clunky New Balances. Now go for the opposite of that. A slim-fitting suit is absolutely essential, according to Brad Bennett, editor of Well Spent.
  • Skip the tie. We're already messing with traditional formality here — a tie will just confuse things. Also optional: a dress shirt.

Some of the best sneakers we can find that would go effortlessly with a suit are the Common Projects Achilles Low ($410) or Adidas Stan Smith ($75).

Alternatively, don't listen to me at all. This style is all about breaking the rules, after all.

Yes, you can wear sneakers to work — if you follow this rule

$

david beckham

The loosening of the work dress code has changed many things.

Ties have been loosened and subsequently thrown out, shirts have lost their collars, and, finally, sneakers have found a place in the revered halls of the workplace.

However, not all sneakers are created equal. Just because no one will bat an eye at a pair of suede New Balances in the office, doesn't mean you should bring your neon trainers.

So what kind of sneakers can you wear around the office?

The rule is easy: keep it simple.

Carefully consider your office environment, and what kind of sneakers you think you may be able to wear to the office. Then go one step simpler than that.

Though sneakers are inherently sporty, it's tricky when you wear them to the office, since you're actually trying to avoid calling to mind the fact that you're not about to go for a jog.

That means avoid things like bright patterns, excessive nylon or stretchy materials, or atypical soles.

A plain-colored leather or suede sneaker like a New Balance 574 or the Adidas Stan Smith will take you far in the business world.

But it doesn't have to end there: Simple shoes like ultra-minimal Common Projects Achilles or the Rancourt Court Classic will be acceptable in virtually any workplace. Even canvas shoes like Vans or Converse All-Stars can be worn in some more casual offices.

Here’s why your next pair of sneakers may be made out of wool

$

Wool shoes

The hottest new trend in sneakers? Wool.

Yes, that wool. The same kind of fabric that lines your favorite suits and overcoats is now being used in running apparel, according to Bloomberg.

Everyone seems to be giving it a try, from startups like Allbirds, who make simple shoes with uppers made entirely out of wool, to Nike, who has collaborated with Pendleton Woolen Mills to make a line of sneakers using the brand's signature fabric and patterns.

It turns out wool has some surprising benefits.

Wool is a light, all-natural material that's able to regulate internal temperatures and still insulate even when wet. It also has natural moisture-wicking properties and antimicrobial tendencies.

Now for the bad news: wool is pretty expensive. The wool version of Nike sneakers cost $20 more than the regular versions, and Allbirds' sneakers cost a relatively high (for the category) $95.

Nike

Still, startups and big corporations alike are betting on the new material to differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded market. The number of new models of sneakers introduced in the past year has increased by 39% according to WGSN, a fashion consultancy, as told to Bloomberg.

Will wool take off? Only time will tell, but early signs point to a promising start. A sports industry analyst told Bloomberg that natural materials like wool are especially popular among millennial consumers.

Allbirds has already raised $2.7 million in venture capital funds after shopping its Kickstarter shoe around in Silicon Valley and New York.

Rancourt Court Classics

There are few items that can spice up a spring wardrobe like a fresh pair of white kicks.

The trend that just won't quit will be back in full force this year, and you don't want to be left out again. The good news is that, with so many options in this now very crowded field of menswear, you don't have to be.

Whether it's a cheaper pair of white Vans or a the ultra-luxe allure of a pair of Common Projects, there's sure to be a pair of white sneakers that speaks to you.

Here are six of our favorites.

Common Projects Achilles ($410)

The granddaddy of this movement is the Common Projects Achilles.

It's a luxury leather sneaker that is far more popular than any $410 sneaker ought to be, and it has cemented its status as the obtuse pinnacle of minimal white sneakers. So loved for being completely devoid of branding and having the perfect silhouette, it's hard to say the competition is copying its success since the design is so uncomplicated.

Common Projects Original Achilles Leather Sneakers, $410.

Rancourt Court Classics ($260)

Rancourt is better known for making moccasins than sneakers, but there's no denying they hit it out of the park with their Court Classics last summer.

They're clean and well-made, and reviewers are happy with how well they've held up. It's also worth noting the price point, which can be seen as a budget version of the fashion-forward Common Projects sneakers, as it's only two-thirds of the price for similar quality.

Rancourt Court Classic Low Sneaker, $260.

Vans Authentic Canvas Sneakers ($45)

Vans is back at it again with the quintessential white canvas shoe. The minimal look can go anywhere from the street to the (casual) office.

J. Crew even has a long-standing collaboration with Vans for their own preppy take on the skater staple.

Nike will release a ‘Back to the Future’ inspired self-lacing sneaker this year

You’ll soon be able to buy these Nike self-lacing shoes inspired by ‘Back to the Future'

NIKE CEO: Self-lacing shoes will be as big as self-driving cars

Nike Power Lace

With the debut of Nike's new self-lacing sneaker, it's clear the sneaker giant has taken another large step in the advancement of shoe technology.

But just how large of a step the new shoe, dubbed the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 remains to be seen. As the 1.0 in its name implies, this sneaker is just the first in what could be a long line of Nike self-lacing sneakers, according to the the company's CEO, Mark Parker.

Parker went on CNBC to further clarify the release of the new sneaker — going as far as to say comparing the self-lacing sneaker tech with self driving car tech is a "good analogy" in terms of mainstream appeal.

"I think the performance that adapts to you [in] real time to suit your needs as an athlete is going to be a par tof product more and more as we head into the future," Parker told CNBC's Sara Eisen.

Nike is calling the technology Power Lace, and it's based on the technology used in a futuristic shoe in the 1989 cult classic "Back to the Future" called the Nike Mag (a real Nike Mag will also hit auction later this year).

Power Lace senses when the wear's foot is in the shoe, and automatically tightens the straps. The level of tightness can be adjusted using buttons on the side of the shoe, providing a custom tightness that traditional lacing systems just can't provide. In the future, the technology will also provide automatic loosening and tightening as the needs of the athlete wearing the shoes changes.

Nike HyperAdapt 1.0

Parker then went on to compare the tech with Nike's Flyknit technology — a proprietary way to stitch together a shoe's upper that gives it a stretchy woven look and feel, allowing your feet greater movement — which also debuted in a single shoe.

"[Adaptive lacing] will become more ubiquitous, I think, as we move forward,"Parker said.

Pricing for the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0. hasn't been announced yet, but don't expect it to come to cheap.

NOW WATCH: The self-lacing Nike sneakers from 'Back To The Future' are real

Reebok is depending on a famous rapper to save the business

$
0
0

Kendrick Lamar Reebok

Reebok's sales pale in comparison to those of the sneaker behemoth Nike, which is the top apparel retailer in the country.

Reebok held 8% of its market just over a decade ago, but as of February 2015 it held only 2%, Adweek reported.

One way Reebok is trying to change the way people think about the brand is by partnering with a star rapper: Kendrick Lamar.

This tactic has been successful for Adidas and Puma, with Kanye West and Rihanna, respectively. And there's certainly a storied connection between rappers and the fashion industry.

"Hip-hop and fashion are the same thing," Lamar told Fashionista. "It's been that way since Run-DMC in the '80s. You've got to attach yourself to something that represents you."

Reebok has been partnering with Lamar since late 2014, and most recently he has been promoting Reebok's classic leather gum shoes, as evidenced by Reebok's Instagram posts. Last year he launched a pair of Ventilators that served as a call to end gang violence in his hometown of Compton, California, Mic noted.

But can that — as Complexwondered in early 2015 when Lamar partnered with Reebok for a campaign surrounding the classic Ventilator shoe — be enough to save Reebok?

It just might be what Reebok needs.

It's worth nothing that Lamar's partnership is different from other big-name hip-hop partnerships — namely Kanye West and Adidas. That starts with the price point, which Complex said was important to Lamar. Men's Ventilators are $74.99, and the Supreme version runs for $109.99. Yeezys are expensive (sometimes selling on eBay for well over a thousand dollars).

"A lot of artists approach high fashion, but for me personally, I just like a more classic, comfortable feel," Lamar recently told Fashionista. "Not to exclude any of these artists' tastes, but I feel you should always do what represents you, so I'm glad I was able to find a brand that complements not only what I do, but where I'm from."

And Reebok, apparently, represents Lamar. When the partnership was first announced in late 2014, he told Reebok in a press release: "Reebok has a history of helping kids in the community realize their potential is limitless. I saw what the brand was doing, and I wanted to be a part of it and make it even stronger. It’s as simple as that. Kids that listen to my music are looking for inspiration. It's important that I continue that message in anything I represent."

This is a crucial component to what makes this collaboration work.

University of Southern California marketing professor and celebrity branding expert Jeetendr Sehdev pointed out three tenets for this collaboration.

"One [reason] is to align with Reebok's new positioning, which is to be more human ... a celebrity which will be able to humanize the brand and keep it real," Sehdev said.

Secondly, Sehdev believes, Reebok is "trying to achieve further leverage [with the] connection between hip hop and fashion." Thirdly, Sehdev says, "Lamar will help Reebok [by] better connecting Reebok with the black youth and black Americans, in particular, who have felt more alienated than other groups by Reebok's less-than-stellar sneaking design. And they [Reebok] seem to be doing that once again ... through a grassroots approach."

A photo posted by reebokclassics (@reebokclassics) on Mar 14, 2016 at 4:55pm PDT on

Lamar has been doing exactly that: going back to his roots.

"You always have to come back to the streets. You always got to look at what the next 13-year-old is wearing because these are the people who make the culture," Lamar told Fashionista. "We can't run from the kids, period — and that's something that we always try to do in our own way. We throw the high cost on shoes and clothes and try to distract it from the kids, but they make the culture."

Billboard described how he (with the help of Reebok) surprised a group of young rappers at a hip-hop workshop in Manchester. Reebok captured it on video:

Consider it a tale of two brands: Kanye West representing the high life and aspiration, and Lamar serving, as Sehdev called it, "an insider to the community." That's not to say one is better — Kanye West has cultivated a tremendous following. They just represent different ends of the spectrum.

"Kanye is so larger than life, he's almost the opposite, he's dehumanizing," Sehdev said. "And I think that Kendrick Lamar is incredibly humanizing. That is probably the largest difference."

All of Lamar's appearances have exemplified his human qualities versus his celebrity status.

"It was important to invest my time — it's not always about the money,"he told Complex last year. "You can throw millions of dollars at people but they don't see your face or hear your words. That money doesn't always mean everything. The fact that we're all right here, in this same spot where I grew up, that's giving back — along with a lot of other things we are doing."

In terms of the bigger picture, Reebok has been overhauling its entire brand. It switched up its logo and replaced it with a delta sign, perhaps signifying its own change. The company has also been zeroing in on the CrossFit acolytes of the world.

The company has been focusing on fragmenting its brand, Sehdev says, with Lamar's partnership highlighting one segment and CrossFitters appealing to another.

And Reebok could be on the right track.

"I think they approach that Reebok is taking certainly seems to be the right approach. They've obviously got a big challenge on their hands," Sehdev said, adding that "if Reebok plays their cards with Lamar, this could be the start of a very promising partnership."

25 crazy sneaker designs that Nike thinks could be the future of footwear

NikeLab

By all accounts, Nike is a major innovator in sneakers and sportswear.

And if their new exhibit at the Milan Design Expo 2016 is any indication, they got there through some pretty out-of-the-box thinking.

Starting with the company's proprietary "Flyknit" shoe upper — a kind of stretchy woven fabric that allows the foot to flex and expand in the shoe — the company has envisioned what could make up the bottom of the shoe in the future.

And the answer ranges from hair curlers to a map, and includes everything in between.

Called "The Nature of Motion," the exhibit is meant to "manifest the previously unimaginable" to find out what the future of athlete footwear really could be.

In 2020, when you're wearing sneakers with cat whiskers on it, you'll know where that idea come from.

The synthetic "whiskers" on this design were made by a 3D printer, and can act as "sensors" that "augment an athlete's senses."

This shoe was dipped in many layers of PU foam, which will never fully compress no matter how hard the athlete runs. It eliminates the feel of the impact of the foot on the ground.

A "gliding convex outsole" on this shoe uses natural momentum to launch runners forward.

Expensive, trendy trainers helped this retailer grow profits by nearly 50%

Nike basketball shoe Kobe Bryat

JD Sports, the high street sports and clothing retailer, had a bumper year in 2015, growing profits and sales massively thanks to British shoppers' appetites for expensive trainers.

In its full year results, released on Thursday, JD reported its full-year results for 2015, and the figures are hugely impressive for the retailer. Profit before tax for the retailer grew by 45%, while revenues jumped 20%.

Here are the highlights from the statement:

  • Revenues; £1.82 billion, up 20% from last year.
  • Operating profit; up 56% to £158.9 million.
  • Earnings per share; up from 35.17 pence to 50.16 pence.
  • Dividend per share; up from 7.05p to 7.40p, an increase of around 5%.
  • Gross profit; 48.5%, down from 48.6% last year.

The store, a staple of high streets across the UK, put much of that success down to the growing trend for so-called "fashion trainers." People are increasingly wearing sports footwear in everyday life, and that's helped a new industry boom, something JD has taken advantage of.

Here are the key paragraphs from JD's results (emphasis ours):

"The investments made over a number of years in developing our multichannel retail proposition and driving improved buying, merchandising and retailing disciplines have given us the platform to exploit the favourable trends which exist for athletic inspired footwear and apparel throughout Europe. We remain committed to continually enhancing our proposition for both customers and third party brand partners."

"Sports Fashion has had an exceptional year with operating profits (before exceptional items) increased by 49% to £162.9 million (2015: £109.3 million). Our fascias have successfully exploited the buoyant market for branded athletic footwear and apparel across Western Europe with like for like store sales growth in excess of 10% for the second consecutive year. Whilst we would not expect a third year of organic growth at this level, the JD fascia is developing well in both its core and international markets."

Fashion trainers designed by the celebrities like rapper Kanye West are incredibly popular with consumers, and it's not uncommon for such shoes to sell out almost instantly, and then for pairs to appear on eBay for as much as £5,000 per pair. Harrods for example, is currently selling pairs of shoes designed by West for £800.

Along with the "athletic inspired footwear" trend, some of JD's success was down to stronger performances overseas, and operational changes in its outdoor brands, Millets and Blacks, the company said.

JD's chief executive, Peter Cowgill, had this to say about the results:

"I am delighted to report that the Group has delivered another very strong set of results for the year to 30 January 2016 with the headline profit before tax and exceptional items increased by 57% to £157.1 million. Given that last year's result was a record for our Group then the performance in the year was very pleasing, further demonstrating the increasing influence of the JD fascia in the UK and beyond.

During the year we have expanded our international presence with additional stores in existing European territories together with a number of stores in new countries. We continue to gain traction in Europe and are confident of the opportunities that exist for the JD fascia in these markets."

Investors in JD have reacted well to the company's surging profits this morning, and around 9:00 a.m. BST (4:00 a.m. ET) shares are up roughly 2%, having jumped 3.3% at the open. Shares are currently trading at £11.84 each. Here's how things look:

Under Armour has a long way to go before it beats Nike — here's why

Under Armour has a long way to go before it usurps Nike.

Though the company has reported impressive earnings quarter after quarter, one of its strongest points is comparatively weak when pitted against rival Nike.

That's NBA star Steph Curry.

Steph Curry's partnership with Under Armour has been a major source of growth for the company. CEO Kevin Plank has acknowledged his contribution to the brand repeatedly.

Analysts estimate that Curry could be worth as much as $14 billion to Under Armour.

But he has a long way to go before he is becomes the industry's next Michael Jordan.

According to a recent Slice Intelligence report (via The Washington Post), Nike's sneakers hold a much bigger share of the online sneaker market than Under Armour's sneakers do.

According to Slice's data, Nike accounted for 31.7% percent of United States online sneaker sales from January 2015 to March 2016. Meanwhile, Under Armour accounted for a paltry 1.4%. The only companies even remotely close to catching up to Nike in online sneaker sales would be Amazon (21.1%) and Zappos (13.5%).

Additionally, Slice highlights how Michael Jordan is the top NBA star when it comes to online sneaker sales; he accounted for 72.4% of online sneaker revenue during the documented time period. Curry accounted for 4.2%.

But that's not to say that Curry hasn't helped Under Armour. In fact, he's helped the brand's sneaker business explode. In its most recent quarter, footwear revenue soared 64%.

Still, that doesn't make it nearly as big as Nike. Nike reigns supreme in the apparel and footwear world.

Air Jordans

Last year, it was ranked the biggest apparel company. The company's total revenue for fiscal 2015 was $30.6 billion. (Under Armour's net revenue for fiscal 2015 was $3.96 billion.)

The company is a favorite amongst millennials and teens, and according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey, Nikes (specifically, Jordans), are the number one trends for male teens in spring 2016.

And Nike is constantly ready for the competition.

During a recent conversation with CNBC's Squawk on the Street, Nike Chairman Phil Knight told Sara Eisen how he feels about Under Armour.

"They're one of them [the competition]. They're one of them," he said. "There are lots of them we compete with. But believe me, we will compete."

And when asked if he "[despises his] enemies still or the competition," he replied, "always."
